Gettysburg Terms and Requirements

All Year Long - RESIDENCIES AT THE PARK

All artists are encouraged to apply, as the Gettysburg National Military Park Artist-in-Residence program (AiR) is designed for all artists to pursue their particular art form while surrounded by the inspiring landscape and history of Gettysburg National Military Park. The prospective candidate must present a cohesive body of work, a complete application proposal including their resume, biography, and proposal of their residency project and how it reflects and may be inspired park resources. All candidates must have merit and/or experience in at least one of the following areas: two-dimensional artwork, sculpture, music, linguistics, writing, screendance, performance art, film, and/or ethnographic fine art, or any other appropriate artist medium.

The Artist-in-Residence will be granted $1000, lodging in the beautiful and historic Klingel Farmhouse (on the battlefield - http://gettysburg.stonesentinels.com/battlefield-farms/klingle-farm/), and a venue (with NPS/NPAF agreement this venue may be online post-residency) for public engagements for participation in Gettysburg's "First Friday" events, through an artist's presentation at the David Wills House (NOTE THAT THIS VENUE IS ONLY AVAILABLE APRIL THROUGH OCTOBER) or other location determined by the Park Rangers. The presentation may also be virtual due to Covid-19 restrictions. Other presentations or activities will be scheduled by arrangement with NPS. The artist will usually present at least one workshop, lecture, or concert and the possibility of an art donation for the NPS National Museum Collection. This can be presented either at the park or another venue as deemed appropriate by NPAF and NPS. ALL EVENTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AND/OR CANCELLATION.

For ease of coordination and communication with the Park Service, Artists or Artist couples must schedule their arrival between 10-3 on federal workdays and must have their own transportation for the month of the residency.

Artists will be expected to have a continuous public and visitor presence throughout their residency, this type of public engagement is likely inevitable if you work en plein air, especially during the busier seasons. Artists must provide their own supplies and equipment for these presentations. We also encourage artists to give more public presentations at the park and in their own community about their residency experience in Gettysburg National Military Park, to further broaden the reach of the program’s purpose and the goals of the NPS and NPS Centennial Objectives. Please include how you envision producing and maintaining any "extra" engagements that you include in your application proposal.

Artists need to provide all of their own insurance for liability, health, covering, but not limited to art supplies, equipment, personal items, reliable transportation, and any insurances governing commercial permitting for required park permits. NPAF nor NPS will provide any insurance for any part of the Artist-in-Residence program. Artists should be self-sufficient, independent and enjoy working in a public, culturally sacred environment, and able to commit to the full Artist-in-Residence (AiR) term. The AiR artist(s) must remain accommodating to inquiring park visitors because of the thoroughfare of their location and/or workspace. The artist must comply with all park regulations and policies governing park employees, volunteers and visitors.

The participating artists may donate an original piece of work inspired by their residency in Gettysburg National Military Park to the NPS at the park, through the NPAF. Donated work must be received no later than a year after the artist’s residency. Artists are required to provide artwork and copyright of donated artwork to NPAF.

The Gettysburg National Military Park Artist-in-Residence program is open to people from all countries. All prospective candidates from outside of the United States must ensure their own proper documentation as it pertains to travel within and to the United States. This may include the application and acceptance of a J-1 and/or other visa requirements through the U.S. International office. National Parks Arts Foundation will assist in this process as we have been through this process.

The deadline for all application submissions and announcements of selected artists will be according to the timeline on the application page and the admissions decision and announcement will be scheduled for those published dates. However, if any dates change applicants will be notified only via social media. Only the selected applicants will be notified of their selection as the Artist in Residence to the program or standing. Each applicant will be required to submit at least 3 pieces of artwork, audio or video files to be considered by renowned judges, and/or NPAF's Art Curator, and the NPS at Gettysburg National Military Park. All panelists remain anonymous and do not provide agency services or portfolio reviews unless made by special arrangement through NPAF.

Only selected artists will be contacted. It is the artists' own initiative to check the status of their proposal submission through accessing their proposal submission through the URL for which they applied. At request, through the URL, we will allow edits and additions up to ten days before the deadline.

The artist(s)-in-residence program may be canceled or interrupted due to a government shutdown, artist non participation, or during any hazardous weather conditions, including, but not limited to, fire danger, environmental concerns, or any unforeseen circumstances, natural or otherwise, to which NPAF and any affiliates will NOT be held accountable or responsible, no refunds will be issued.

NPAF is NOT responsible for and will not return any application donation fees, contributions, monies spent, monies owed, or any funding if there is a natural occurrence or anything that interrupts, changes, delays, or cancels the program in any way. NPAF cannot guarantee or be held responsible for AIR interruptions, non-acceptance of AIR program, artists, artwork, or cancelations or delays because of Government decisions or natural causes. The accepted artist will owe any funds spent or owed by/to NPS or NPAF as it pertains to the program if they (the artist(s)) cancels, delays, or changes any part of the program. If the AiR program is terminated or interrupted, the artist(s) in residence may be directed to relocate from the park or hazardous area. The remainder residency term may be made up at a later date at the discretion of the NPS and NPAF.

All insurance is required of the selected artist(s) including automobile, health, accidental and insurance to cover all art, supplies, personal items and is the sole responsibility of the artist as any and all insurance will not be provided by NPAF or the NPS or NPS concessionaires or park Friends groups. Proof of insurances must be provided. Artist(s) will be responsible for all costs affiliated with the program if they are the selected artists(s) to the program, and then cancel, change or delay the program in any way, prior, during, or post the residency term.
