Fort Union National Monument Artist in Residence Terms and Conditions

All artists and artist couples are encouraged to apply, as the Fort Union National Monument Artist in Residence program is designed for all artists to pursue their particular art form while surrounded by the inspiring landscape and history of Fort Union National Monument. The prospective candidate(s) must present a cohesive body of work, a complete application including their resume, biography, and proposal of their residency project and how it reflects and may be inspired park resources. All candidates must have merit and/or experience in at least one of the following areas: two-dimensional artwork, sculpture, music, linguistics, writing, performance art, film, and/or ethnographic fine art, or any other appropriate artist medium.

Once or twice a year, an artist or artists will be selected to work in Fort Union National Monument for a one-month term in April and October. The artist(s) in residence will be granted lodging, and a venue for at least one workshop, lecture, or concert, and the possibility of an arts donation.

This is a no studio residency, so artists will have to work in their lodging or plein air. A vehicle is required to get around and explore beautiful northern New Mexico.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS NO WIFI AT THIS LOCATION.

Artists may present, at minimum, one 1-hour public program, workshop, concert, or lecture (in person or Virtually depending on COVID-19 practices) during their residency at Fort Union National Monument. This can be presented either the monument or another venue as deemed by NPAF and NPS.

Artists must provide their own supplies and equipment for these presentations. We also encourage artists to give more public presentations at the monument and in their own community about their residency experience in Fort Union National Monument, to further broaden the reach of the program’s purpose and the goals of the NPS and NPS Centennial Objectives.

Artists need to provide all of their own insurance for liability, health, covering, but not limited to art supplies, equipment, personal items, reliable transportation, and any insurances governing commercial permitting for required park permits. NPAF nor NPS will provide any insurance for any part of the artist in residence program. Artists should be self-sufficient, independent and enjoy working in an isolated environment, and able to commit to the full Artist in Residence (AIR) term. The AIR artist must remain accommodating to inquiring park visitors because of the thoroughfare of their location and/or workspace. The artist is expected to comply with all park regulations and policies governing park employees, volunteers, and visitors.

The participating artists may donate an original piece of work inspired by their residency in Fort Union National Monument to the NPS at the monument, through the NPAF. Donated work must be received no later than a year after the artist’s residency. Artists are required to provide copyright of donated artwork to NPAF and Fort Union National Monument, NPS.

If you have specific questions about this residency please submit them to info@nationalparksartsfoundation.org by TEN DAYS before the deadline of October 11th, 2019.

For ease of coordination and communication with the Park Service, Artists or Artist couples must schedule their arrival between 10-3 on federal workdays, and must have their own transportation for the month of the residency.

NOTICE TO INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS:
We have hosted a number of international artists successfully in the past. We encourage you to apply. However, depending on the visa that is required of you for your stay by the relevant federal agency, NPAF may not be allowed under U.S. law to convey donated, travel, or other funds to you before the residency. We may be able to reimburse you up to the total amount (if any) stated in the park application. NOT ALL residencies have funds for residents. So if this is crucial, please check with us and with the U.S. embassy/consulate in your country.
